Hello,

I'm planning a trip to Malaysia and Indonesia in October/November and have a provisional itinerary set up. I wanted to include the Kota Kinabalu climb but after searching online I get some pretty steep prices for tour packages (up to 350 euro). Are these prices realistic? Is it better to just arrive in Kota Kinabalu and arrange the tour there?
I traveled to lots of places around the world and always booked my tours in situ but KK permits seem to be limited... If the prices are correct : does anyone have any experiences of going about it solo?

Thanks

KK is a city, so it requires neither permits nor climbing!

He/she probably means Mt Kinabalu. And yes, it's not so cheap to climb this mountain anymore. People have reported costs in the RM 700-1000 range, but 350 Euro (= RM 1470) is more than that. I wonder if they have again increased the prices.

You are not allowed to climb the mountain on your own without a package.

Many people have reported climbing Gunung Kinabalu without a package for much less.
However, this means climbing in one day, without overnighting on the mountain.
For such a climb, only a guide and a permit are required, both available from the park HQ, bypassing the expensive packages and tour operators. Of course, this is only an option for the fit.

With "without package" I meant without permit and guide.

Thanks for the responses.

You were right of course , I meant Mt Kinabalu : it was rather late last night :) Those prices are still steep but more affordable :)

I guess it is just a question of taking the risk of not climbing if you just show up with no booking... Would be a waste as there is not much to see in KK beside the mountain (in my opinion...)

@schmolphin : are you planning on booking through to the internet or just show up and hope for the best?

@schmolpin Hard to say : I will start my trip from KL to Kuching, then on to Brunei (plane or bus) and then on to KK. Depending on the price of the plane tickets I could arrive anywhere between the 24th and the 27th... That's why I rather not book the tour in advance :-) But like you said : rooms are pretty scarce on the mountain, so I will have to make a decision quite soon...
