Hi All!

I'm having a few problems trying to organise a tour of the Kinabatangan River. I'll be in the Sabah area of Malaysian Borneo from the 20th-27th February 2015. I'll be travelling on my own and I'm looking to do a 3/4 day tour of the Kinbatangan river, encompassing river cruises (with the hope to see orang-utans, proboscis monkeys, Borneon pgymy elephants, birds, crocodiles etc.), Gomantong cave, Ox-Bow Lakes, Turtle Island and Sepilok Orang-utan Centre.

I've contacted a couple of tour operators which I like the look of the tours, but they seem to be charging twice the stated price for single travellers, even if I request to join another group. I'm not happy or able to afford to pay twice the cost.

Does anyone have any advice or can anyone recommend any tours that do not discriminate against single travellers quite so much?

Thanks in advance!

I visited the Kinabatangan river as a single traveller without a tour:

and saw lots of wildlife in just one day:

Thanks for the advice alfredm. I'm really looking to do an organised tour though, I don't have a huge amount of time and just want to make the most of it. However, the search for a tour company that doesn't want extort me is not going so well, so I may have to resort to not doing a tour and organising it myself.

Has anyone joined a tour as a single traveller recently and not been charged over double the price of someone in a pair? I'd love to know if there were any tours out there. Every quote I get for being on my own is just ridiculous. I just want to join an existing group to cut costs.

Thanks again in advance for any advice =)

FYI, most organised tours in Sabah nowadays are ridiculously expensive. In recent years prices for tours in Sabah have skyrocketed.

If you want to take one, be prepared to pay for it.

Hi,

Not sure of your budget but I'm on a tour around the second week in Feb with 'Uncle Tan's' and will be paying around 640MR for 4 days/3 nights. (also travelling solo)
Take a look at their website Here

Uncle Tan's place is very, very basic but also very, very magical. Be aware that you likely won't be able to see elephants there. I took their tour but only found out that the area where they are doesn't have elephants once we had arrived. Bummer... although the place itself is spectacular.
For elephants look further downriver, near Sakau. I only ended up with one day there and never saw them.
I found traveling alone very straightforward.

Charlotte, did you end up having any joy in finding a tour of the river? Me and my boyfriend are looking to do a tour too and would appreciate any findings you have made. Thanks, Hannah
