Hey everyone,
I'm planning a trip to Malaysia in Oct. Once again, I'm turning to the wisdom on this forum for some suggestions please!
Im a 30 yo solo female back-packer.
I have too weeks in early Oct (time/dates aren't really negotiable so although weather might not be amazing I don't have any choice regarding when i go :-(
Id like to checkout KL very briefly - a day or so when I fly in. Borneo has been recommended and Id like to go to Georgetown.
Scenery and culture and bit of activities and nightlife are desirable. I'm not an experienced diver so wont be dedicating a lot of time to this. Neither am I keen on spending days sun-bathing.
I'm willing to take some cheap internal flights as well to get around.
So any recommended destinations or must-see places? Any particularly nice hostels to cross paths with other travelers?
Thanks in advance!
H

As a starting point see here what Malaysia has to offer:

Combining east and west Malaysia is an option, and there are direct flights to Sarawak or Sabah from Pinang, so you might fly KL -> Pinang - Kuching and back to KL. Option to do KL-Pinang overland with a stop in the Cameron highlands to see the tea plantations.
You can spend some time in Kuching, visiting the city and the attractions around it, then flying to Mulu NP for a couple of days.
Or you skip Sarawak and fly to Sabah, where you focus on the wildlife areas and perhaps do some beach on the islands (either near KK or around Semporna).

you may check out Borneo tour information from www.masenangtravel.com.my or email them at mtours@masenangtravel.com.my where they are "borneo specialist"
Hello, I'd really recommend Penang and Malacca for really amazing Chinese-Malay food. They are hawkers, on the street or sometimes in shops that MAY look dirty, but dont worry about it! They have history and buildings full of character + cultural.
Langkawi has a nice beach and also nature parks you can do if you are keen. For nightlife, I think you should keep to the ones in KL, more cosmopolitan and "safe" in the sense of there are many foreigners.
Yes internal flights are cheap, unless you have time and don't mind taking the buses, if not can check out the train from KL - Butterworth (Penang and Georgetown)
Have a wonderful time!

Thanks everyone - really helpful replies, as always!
Alfred - I found you suggestions particularly interesting. After doing a tiny bit of research, it seems like Borneo has loads to offer that i hadnt previously considered. I open to getting Air Asia flights to make it more efficient to get around.
Anyone have suggested highlights for perhaps 6 days in Borneo?
Thanks again!

Tons of things to do in Sarawak, but for instance the six days could be spent as follows:
Kuching and around: 4 days (the city, Semenggoh, the Sarawak cultural village, possibly some daytrip to a neighbouring NP)
Mulu: 2 days (direct flight from Kuching)

Thanks Alfred - do you think id be comprimising much if i dont go to Sabah & KK...?
Feel like Im missing out but its more expensive than i would have expected to do Danum Valley etc
Id like to have done Sepilok and Kinabatagan. Are you aware of any reasonably priced tours in these areas?
Getting v confused!!

Hi again,
So in response to advice here, it looks like Im going to try to take in the following:
Sepilok and Kinabatangan (3 - 4 days)
Mulu (? 1-2 days)
Im probably going to fly from KL to Sandakan and do Sepilok and Kinabatangan from there...Ill probably have to fly to KK or Kuching from Sandakan and get another flight from either KK or Kuching to Mulu.
Any advice on this route please?
After Mulu, I'll have to fly to Kuching or KK. From there, I want to start seeing Malaysia. I'll probably go to Penang after Mulu. I can fly to Penang from either KK or Kuching.
After Georgetown , Im going to Langkawi.
On the way back to KL from Langkawi, I would like to stop in the Cameron highlands. Bus journeys look slow to get from Georgetown to Tanah Rata -** is it possible to do this via shared taxi does anyone know?**
If Im made any big errors or unwise decisions in this suggested plan, please let me know!!
Would love to hear some comments from those in the know!
Thanks as always!
