I wrote this for the Haystack but it's too long, thought I'd post it here so it won't be entirely wasted.

Wheeler's Guesthouse, KL

In KL, you won't find a handier position. You are right in the middle of Chinatown, a short wall to Petaling Street night market, Central Market, Pasar Seni train station and Putra bus station. And it's not too far to get to Little India, KL Tower and other sights.

The cleaning staff work hard to keep the shared facilities clean but you have to make allowances for the occasional guest who is used to a mother who mops up after them. Recently an effort has been made to clean up the entrance. More could be done but perhaps this part of the building is out of their hands.

The rooms are small and the floors could do with a good scrub. You might get a small dresser, maybe a stool, maybe all the legs will be intact. In one room the only place to hang my clothes was the rail at the head of the bed.

Most rooms do not have windows. Don't worry about it—the outside windows let in the street noise. There is an air-conditioning system that is fanned into all the rooms. They are quite cool. No need to pay extra for air con.

Like most cheap places I've stayed in Asia, they could use a plumber.

Make sure you bring everything you need. You get a sheet on your bed but bring your own towel, soap and toilet paper.

The staff are always cheerful and helpful, never pushy. The vibe is good—at least the mice seem to like it.

Putra bus station is all the way across town at PWTC, about an hour's walk.

I disagree that Chinatown is a nice area to stay in. It's dirty, overcrowded and polluted, and has very little nightlife.
