Hey,

Im trying to make a travel plan for my holiday to Malysia next July and may be you can help me!

We plan to climb Mt. Kinabula en before leaving Sabah again I would like to see Urang Utans. I think the best way to achieve this is going to the Sepilok reservate?
I have read it is a 6 hours travel from Kota Kinabalu, but does somebody know if you can also travel from the headquarters from the Kinabalu Park? That could be a shortcut for us! Preferable by bus because I think flying might be too expensive.

My ideal:
Day 1: After 2day climbing Mt. Kinabalu arrive in headquarters again at 13.00 PM and travel to Sandakan by bus
Day 2: Visiting the reservate and travel back to KK

I would be very pleased if you could provide me with this information.

Hello Emmie,

We have travelled to Kota Kinabalu. We did not climb Kinabalu, but we visited Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park by boat. It was wonderful, but everyone who has climbed Kinabalu has said it was worthwhile.

You don't say which country you are from but we found it very inexpensive to fly from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan where Sepilok Sanctuary is. We did a day trip and it was worthwhile. Sepilok has a lot of tourists but you can see the orang-u-tans being fed and you can do a lot of walks through the sanctuary. It's well worth it. We also had time to walk through the markets in Sandakan and visit a war memorial, so one day would be enough.

July 2008? There are buses that do the routes you require but I would suggest flying back from Sandakan. Air Asia has cheap flights and regularly specials them - but not usually for flights a year in advance.

Flying is about $20 or less.

Hello,

Thank you for replying to my question.
Last week I was searching for flights (two-way) from KK to Sandakan.
But I could only find a 60 euro flight en thought that was quite expensive.
Also find flyasianxpress (FAX) but it seems that they do not have any flights available anymore.
Do you think we just have to go and we have chances to get some tickets ? (20 dollars is good!)

Thanks Emmie

I bought a Malaysian Airways from KK to Sandakan for RM 100 one way. After booking I realised that Air Asia was even cheaper! I guess the rates on both these airlines specially Air Asia vary according to how early you book.

Air Asia has an ad in this mornings paper KK-Sandakan (so presumably Sandakan-KK too) for RM6.99 one way. Bookings thru til 1 July travel period 3 July to 30 September. There will be other fees but they aren't too high as you fly from the LCCT in KK. airasia.com

Malaysia Airlines are advertising a Sandakan/KK fare today for RM39 plus fees. These fees may be higher as they fly from KKIA which has higher landing charges than the LCCT that Air Asia flys from.

the bus from Mt.Kinabalu to Sandakan will be approx.MYR 35- we rode on SIDA bus from Mt,Kinabalu to GumGum(Uncle Tan) in April for MYR 30per person.
THe cost from KK to Mt.Kinabalu was MYR 15 per person. The ride takes 1,5 hours from KK to M.Kinabalu and 5 hours from Mt.Kinabalu to Sandakan. The bus stop is right in from of the main park gate, where you just sit on the bench and can flag a bus down. The bus has A/C comfortable seats. IMHO I'd not go back to KK and then to fly to Sandakan, I'd take the bus.
