In Sept, 7-11th will be a good time. People usually hang out in Kampong Kuantan or Belimbing for fire flies. Both are next to each and other on same Selangor river. As for Bukit Melawati, it's a historic site cum secondary forest park. The place is famous for Dusky Leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus obscurus) spotting. It is a mangrove forest dweller and has the same habits of its famed cousin big-nose Probosis Monkey. The intriguing thing about them is their babies are born with golden orange fur, while adults are black and funny mohican hair style.
Actually, there are lots of places in the west coast for fire-fly viewing but tourists throng Kg Kuantan/Belimbing as it is the nearest one from KL. Easy enough for tour agents to arrange trips or DIY. Honestly, the place is slowly dying from river pollution (Selangor is the most industrialised state) and over-tourism. They only gather on Sonneratia trees and these trees can't take pollution. Light from tour boats, resorts and noise are also spooking the colonies away.
#6 is right to say "see them before they disappear!".
The best place, IMHO, to see fire flies is Bagan Krian and Kuala Gula, west coast Perak. They are unsung, hidden and absolutely magical to see glittering trees fringing the river. There's a place you can take a 50 mins hike and walk up to trees peppered with fire-flies, no boat ride required. I've been trying to photograph the magical phenomenon for years but boat rides were too shaky for very-low speed shutter. Maybe someday i'll get a good shot and post it on my user-profile for everyone to see.
