Do I need an International Drivers Licence do hire a car in Langkawi?

Depends where you are from and how long you will drive. You can ignore it completly with some of the local hires...fine until something goes wrong!

I hired a car from our hotel (Berjaya) for several days with an ordinary UK licence.

No problem.

agree with #2. In Malaysia, it is always no problem until you got problem. so just be careful and don't drive & drive yaa!!

True ... and watch out for the buffies and coos crossing the road at nite. :))

In all the 12 years we've been going in and out of LGK, we have only been stopped by the traffic police once - that was to check the validity of our car hire.

Would help if you say where you are from and what licence you hold. It's generally easier for people with licences e.g from UK to drive using their home licence.
