Hi everyone

I'm heading to Malaysia on 10th December until 3rd January with my boyfriend - and we did quite a lot of reading before re the weather conditions and monsoon and figured that we will be ok if we stay east coast, but since booking I have had quite a few friends who have said that we would be able to go to other parts of the country and the weather should be fine - so I thought it would be good to check the consensus on here as to where would be good places to still visit at this time of year and not be badly affected by the weather?

I've visited the country before, and we are really excited about the food, meeting nice people, being somewhere excellent and truly unique for Christmas (not touristy and busy, but buzzy and on the coast if possible), and I would really like to do something with my boyfriend around learning to sail if possible as next year we are going to look to get our skipper licenses.

Any tips on the above would be welcome while we plan our route for our 3 week trip!

Thanks
Sue

I would avoid the east coast and southern Sarawak. The west coast and Sabah should have decent weather. What are you interested in? KL is nice at Xmas.

Thanks Alfred! I actually meant that we are planning on staying mostly on the west coast rather than east coast as east coast is where the monsoon is! Sorry that was a typo!

Will Sabah be ok? I wasn't aware we would be ok with weather? I also was looking at North Sumatra but think the weather is not great there.

We weren't planning on being in the city at Xmas necessarily but could be persuaded.

Any tips around sailing or diving on the west ?

Last December the mainland east coast got flooded (some tourists were flown out with helicopters, more then 250k locals sheltered...). I was on Langkawi waiting for the water to go down (it didn't and I had to change my plans). I guess Langkawi counts as touristy and busy... Good food: think about Penang or Malacca (but both touristy as well). Have a look at Taiping or Ipoh.

Sumatra is an Indonesian Island and not in Malaysia.

Thanks Uligaen - yes I meant west coast sorry not east - that was a typo.

Thanks for the tips will check out your recommendations. I know Sumatra is Indo not Malay, just thought it worth asking here.

Thanks
Sue

Hi we were in KL recently and the haze is a bit disturbing. To avoid this yet staying in the city we opted to rent a vacation resort at reasonable price. We were able to enjoy fresh air daily with a beautiful pool and were just a 10 minutes away from KLCC so it was ideal. Good luck.
