There is no budget tour operator for the Danum valley. They are all expensive :-)

I just received a quote from sticky rice at US$348 for 3days 2 nights! also read on tripadvisor its possible to arrange under your own steam and save up to a third in costs, but also sometimes the DVC authortity dont release beds to solo travellers,

guess have to swallow the expense if I want to see it!

See if it's cheaper to book direct through Borneo Rainforest Lodge. Though it's expensive however you book!!!

The Field Center in Danum Valleu has inexpensive accommodations, but getting them directly through the Field Center is tough, as the Field Center is very slow to respond to email inquiries. I think requests are forwarded to Ann Ogitil. You could try calling her at +60 88 326 317. To get to Danum, you'll have to get to Lahad Datu (flying from KK is an option) and then take the Field Center's transportation. Check out when the transport goes online; same for the kind of accommodations the Field Center offers (from camping to non-AC rooms to AC rooms). If you want to use a travel agent (more expensive, but it gets done, consider Sticky Rice Travels in KK (Charlie)).

Well Danum Valley was certainly an experience I dont regret, being honest I'd only recomend it if you were a serious botanist , ornithologist, entomologist etc,

You hear the wildlife, but I thought very difficult to spot, although its virtually all around you!, it felt like being in a David Attenborough programme, deep in rain forrest walking through a carpet of leaves , virtually no sunlight breaking through & soaked in sweat,

Its amazing seeing the size of the trees , & what grows amongst and around them, as I mentioned I booked it direct through the field centre and paid 770 RM,

If you want to see wildlife I'd say Kinabatangam is best ,I used a well know guide called Osman or Usman, its his wife Yanti who answers the phone though, he's a character and is mentioned on Tripadvisor, !! I thought he was a great guide and would recomend him he has great eyes and spots everything !! even night owls when its pitch black!

he tends to hog the conversation over dinner which is sometimes a pain , but he's no problem, and as I say he's a great guide , his contact number is 60 19 841 5259, he charges 70RM per day for homestay & you get three meals , plus 50 RM for each 2 to 2.5 hr boat trips, I stayed 2 full days which is enough

I also went to Bako national park in Sarawak & stayed overnight & done a night walk cost I think either 10 or 20 RM which was fantastic and recomend, whilst in Kuchin I also visited Semengoh the orang utan center which got me a clsoe glimpse of a full grown male I think 20 RM entry

Bako NP is 20RM and 15 RM to stay overnight u have to pre book at the NP office in Kuching , cost to Bako is 3,50 RM on bus but 40 RM return on boat defo stay overnight and do the walk!

I visited Danum Valley last summer and I'm still dreaming of the place. It really is one of the most amazing places I've every been. I can't wait until I have the chance to go back.

In regard to tour operators, I am of the mindset that you get what you pay for. The Borneo Rainforest Lodge is expensive, but the service is great and the guides are top notch. Our guide's name was Denny and he showed us so many different species endemic only to Borneo or the neighboring islands, including orangutans, gibbons, rhinoceros hornbills, and much more. Seriously, if you are a wildlife enthusist, this is something worth splurging on, because it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I also believe that there are great tour operators that are not expensive, but in Danum Valley, there aren't many options. However, our guide Denny may do private tours where you stay in more economical cabins, in lieu of the Rainforest Lodge. You can contact him to find out at Dennysiusalaysius@gmail.com.
