Hi. I'm wondering if anybody has gone overland from Malaysia into Thailand lately, and if so how was it? Just wondering if it is safe right now. We are thinking of flying into KL and making our way overland to Vietnam.

Cheers!

The border crossings on the west side through Perlis and Kedah are fine. Lots of buses do the daily crossing through Bukit Kayu Hitam, and the train goes through Padang Besar.

Just one week ago, I took the train from Penang/Butterworth, Malaysia, to the border station of Padang Besar, got off train, crossed the footbridge and went through Malaysian and Thai immigration, then walked over to Padang Besar town on the Thai side and caught a local bus to Hadyai. No problems at all. Immigration authorities and townspeople were friendly. It took about only 15 minutes to check out of Malaysia and into Thailand. If you purchase ticket all the way to Hadyai or Bangkok, then you will do immigration right in the train station....there is no need to leave station and walk into town. Very easy...!!!
