We are shortly going to be staying in KL for a few days and wonder if either the Bird or Butterfly parks are worth visiting and are they easy to walk to from the Shangri-la hotel?

Only had time for the bird park when in KL recently, over in the Lake Gardens area, and well worth it IMHO. We stayed a bit further away from it than Shangr-La, over near Petronas Towers, so took a taxi. (Think about the heat and humidity) Taxi cost 5RM! But, coming back, we had to book a taxi at the Bird Park, and I think that cost about 20RM. Still dirt cheap, but they had made their mark up there. Didn't have time for the butterflies so we did them in Penang. Butterflies can be tricky things to get a good photo of.

Use the taxi. It's too far to walk to the parks from Shangri La. There's a short cut but it's toooo complicated for a KL newbie ;-)

The butterfly park is great. I was there two years ago. Beautiful butterflies of all colurs shapes and sizes. They also have an excellent display of other invertebrates that live in Malaysia! Amazing picture and live exhibits of huge beetles and leaf insects. Worth spending some time there.
Bird park is good too.

I like the bird park. You can definitely walk it from Shangri-La but it'll take a while and the way is not that obvious. If you are not the explorer type (and if you were, you wouldn't be asking, you'd just walk it), it's best to take a taxi there and walk back.

I visited it recently and took the Hop-on Hop-off bus and it was brilliant! They cover several interesting points around the city including all the must-see places, including the Bird Park. It costs us RM38 per person and you're free to get off and on anytime you wish for the whole day at a single cost. The bus is a double decker with air-con and very comfortable. I would highly recommend it. I think the nearest point to your hotel would be the KL Tower which is just behind your hotel. Maybe a good idea to consult the hotel consierge and I'm sure they'll be happy to provide you with more infos. Have fun!

if you want something more natural, suggest you visit the kuala selangor bird sanctuary. its an open area over 40 acreas partly surrounded
by mangrove swamps. besides the birds you can view other marine life, mud crabs, mud skippers, iguanas. there arealso lots of monkeys.
best time to visit is to be there around 4 pm. first visit the historical light house then follow by the bird park and adjourn for sea food dinners
by the river banks. before return to your hotel comforts, visit the popular fire flies sanctuary . the whole swarm of flies lighted up like christmas
trees. best time to visit is after 8pm.
