Hey...!
I've been to Koh Samui [Thailand] a while ago and absolutely loved the place! [I know some people would have the 'how could you?!' response, but I did!]. For those of you who've not been there, Samui is an island in the South of Thailand...has a good mix of touristy beaches with good food / bars / night clubs / restraunts...it also has its share of the quieter beaches where one can relax & just do nothing...and yea, the diving is also pretty good. Added benefit is that its not too expensive (we got AMAZING rooms for about 1400 bhat in peak season)
I'm now planning my next holiday [tho its still a looooooong way away :( ] and wanted to know if there are any similar beach destinations in Malaysia that I could visit. I'd love to know about a good seaside place that has good parties / relaxation / diving / bars and at the same time is not too expensive. [Thats not asking for too much, is it? :) ].
Please drop in a line with any suggestions / info / views you may have on this. Looking fwd to it...
Cheers!

1.Dont bother with redang island, Too expensive coz you have to go through their package stays.
2.Pulau sipadan is rather expensive, the last time i was there, but the sea was superb. rather costly
3.Definitely Pulau Perhentian. There is the Perhentian besar and kecil.
Getting to perhentian
1.By bus
Hentian Putra (opposite PWTC / The MALL) in kl, look out for either Mahligai and Mutiara Ticket Counter. Purchase the ticket to kuala Besut. The buses would leave at 9.30pm, you should be in Kuala Besut (Jetty to perhentian) early next morning 5.00am.
2.By train
KTM operates via Kuala Lumpur Sentral (KL Sentral) to tanah merah is one of the stop rrecommended as the journey to Kuala Besut is shorter (approx. 45mins). Taxi services are easily available from Tanah Merah to Kuala Besut jetty.
3. By air
Malaysia Airline System (MAS) operates daily flights via Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Kota Bharu, Flight time approx 45mins.
Budget carrier Air Asia flies from KLIA to kota bharu. Kota Bharu is the recommended point to entry as the journey to kuala besut.
Boat Services
Fast Boat RM60.00 per person(return)
Departure Daily
Kuala Besut - Perhentian Island ; 7.00am-5.30pm
Perhentian Isand - Kuala Besut; 8.00am, 12.00 noon, 4.00pm

The waters there are absolutely wonderful. Plenty of travellers coming and going to thailand.
If you need more info i'll be back to check in here again later.
Hi Wong,
Thanks a lot for the info! I would def. read / explore more about Pulau Perhentian. But in the meantime, please feel free and send in any more details.
- What're the costs' like for stay / food.
- Season time / Weather
- Does it have a good bar scene / night life also?
- anything else you want to fill me in about.
Thanks again!

No problem. Glad to know that my info is useful.
1. Rooms are priced approx RM40 for a Queen sized bed chalet. Bathrooms are all shared. Most of the chalets are up in the mountains, so when u wake up, you can see the sunset / sun rise (not sure which one). Fan only rooms. Most hostels there provide mosquito nets. But its best to bring your own. Restaurants are rather pricy, but the portion is rather large.
2. Monsoon season just ended on the end of febuary, so i dont think you have to worry bout bad weather. Heard that the weather there has been good these few days.
3. In the Perhentian Kecil, there isn't any pubs or bars. But dont worry, everyday each hostels on the beach take turns to hold a night party. This way, you can meet everyone from the whole stretch of the beach because everyone will be going for that party.
4. There are many hostels on the island maybe around 10-15. But they only accept walk-ins. Reccomended place to stay would be Moonlight, Lily or Panorama. But Go for panaroma first. each has about 20-50 chalets. So dont worry bout having problems finding a place to stay.
5. If you are a thirsty drinker, please buy more than enough supplies for yourself before you leave for the island. A 2litre bottle of water would cost you around RM5. So please go the town and get yourself a carton of mineral water. A carton of 24, 600ml each would cost around RM10-15.
6. If you are single and want to meet someone of the opposite sex, it is necessary to buy your own liquor. Buy lots of it. So when you are in the island, the ladies / men (the opposite sex) will flock to you faster. Liquor on the island would cost more or maybe twice the amount of the price you get on the island.
7. If you dont plan to pay much on food, stock yourselve up with plenty of cup noodles or any instant food, bags of chips etc.
I dont know what else to say. Will put more in once i remembered something. Just ask if you need more info.
Happy Holidays

I have been to samui and few other islands in Thailand and I feel M;sian beaches are much better .... by the way, i'm malaysian, hihi!
The sea water is clear and lovely and the snorkelling is top class .... much much more to see than in samui. Perhentian is a great choice!
But what Malaysian islands lack is the "party" or "nitelife" factor. As it's a muslim country, you won't find any girlie bars and stuff like what you find in Thailand. So, the best you can do is get a couple of beers and get a few fellas to party with you.
If you are looking for the wild partying of full moon partys like in samui.... nope ... you'll won't find it here.
But if you are looking for great waters, amazing beaches, incredible underwater life, quite friendly people, good food .... then Malaysia is the place!!!!
Cheers!
i agree with crazy warrior. not much on the nightlife of dancing and getting drunk. malaysia is a wonderful place for talks with friends and just going out to mamaks for bonding. so if youre willing to enjoy a more laidback and quiet scenery. malaysia is the place. as what the advertisement of visit malaysia 2007 is here in manila says "my malaysia, make it yours!"
