My wife and me from India will be travelling Malaysia during Saturday, 25th August to Saturday 1st September 2007. I need your advise, tips on following plan. Please guide me or suggest any changes if you find.
We thought of staying 2 nights at Langkawi, 1 night at Penang, 2 nights at Genting and 2 nights at Kuala lampur, We will be travelling in the same order as some of my Friends advised me to avoid Genting on weekends so we are visting Langkawi, Penang first then coming to Genting, KL and catching return Flight from KL to India on Saturday 1st Sept.
We thought of flying by Air Asia from KL to Langkawi, what is suggested mode of transport between Langkawi to Penang Boat/Ferry or Air Asia? How much time it takes by Boat? Some friends suggested to do either Langkawi or Penang for 2 days as according to them both are similar and do something else (I don't know what) for 1 day.
The places to visit in KL are KL twin tower, KL tower, Petaling Street, China Town, Bintang walk, Dataran Merdeka, Batu Caves, Central Market, National History Museum etc.
Please suggest same for other places. I will do hotel booking on net, please suggest nice hotels, prices around 150-200 Ringgit per night.

19th thru 26th Aug is a school holiday and 31/Aug is an Independent day, thus bus, trains, ferry and flights will be very busy. Would advise you book in advance for your transportations and accommodations.
Ferry Langkawi to Penang takes approx 2 hrs. 1 day in Langkawi is a rush. You may enjoy the Independent Day (Merdeka) at Dataran Merdeka on evening of 30/Aug. You may also take firefly flight Langkawi to Penang budget airliner twice a day

- Take Firefly from Langkawi to Penang. Air Asia does not cover routes to and fro Langkawi and Penang.
2. I think it would be quite a waste of time to visit Langkawi and Penang at the same time if you are thinking about beach. Langkawi would have more to offer than Penang. I suggest you do other activities when in Penang, such as visiting Snake temple, Sleeping Buddha, Gurney Drive at night for food and drinks.
3. If you decide to skip Penang, then you can consider Melaka - but just for 1 night. In this town, the buildings are well preserved and food is good. Every Sunday night there is a night bazaar. Though the town is really small, people are friendly and the place is filled with heritage.

Penang - Bayview Georgetown, Cititel

Thanks beckypik and funnetbabe for suggestions. I will explore more about Melaka.
Any idea about Langkawi to Penang ferry cost and time? Any recommended hotels in the budget of 150-200 MR in Langkawi, KL?
I read Langkawi has duty free shopping, tax is refunded if stayed more than 48 hours. So doing shopping is better in Langkawi than KL? Can anyone also put light on shopping?
Thanks & Regards.

Tioman Island is great to visit if you like beach-snorkeling-walk in the forest. Can be combined with KL and Camoron Highlands.
Penang is excellent shoppingplace.
Have a nice time

I think I would prefer Melaka over Genting. Melaka is the historical city and there are plenty to see there. People go to Genting for the cold weather, a so-so (to me) theme park and casino.
If you go to Melaka, you can actually skip Penang because Melaka is somewhat similar to Penang. This way, you can spend more time in Langkawi, if you like. I personally prefer Melaka more than Penang... More things to see and do, and definately easier to travel around as all attractions are within walking distance from each other. Since it's the holiday season, many locals working in KL and Singapore will be heading home. Remember to buy your tickets early.
I think you should really consider taking AirAsia... It's so much faster so you can spend more time there. Check Zackry's website. He stays in Langkawi...
