It's going to be my first time out of Australia and I'll be touching down in KL on 22 October.

I'm not exactly sure as to where I'll head, but am thinking either up towards Penang, or alternatively over to Borneo. I'm keen to see who else is travelling around Malaysia who would like some company. I'm keen to get amongst nature, eat some fantastic food, go to temples, go hiking, see animals and of course laze around on some beaches...

I'm also trying to figure out cheap and secure accommodation when I touch down in KL if anyone's got some good tips, and what sort of security measures should I be taking?

Malaysia is a pretty safe country,,no need to do anything special.Just take the usual precautions you would anywhere...don't wave around large amounts of cash,or walk around drunk on your own in the middle of the night etc.

There are plenty of places to stay in KL.Do you want to stay in a private room or a dorm? Budget?

Hi, Penang is a good start for you. Then you can pay a visit to Malacca, a historical city in Malaysia, before you fly to Borneo. I went to Mulu on August alone, Mulu is a very beautiful place with its natural formation of limestone cave, there are few limestone caves which are very very big and beautiful. And if you want more adventurous trekking and hiking, you can climb up to the pinnacles (early booking is required). The trekking would be very challenging, even more challenging than Mount Kinabalu. But if you just want a simple hiking, you can direct contact with the Mulu National Park HQ, to go to the Sarawak Chamber, the biggest cave in the world, up to now. Then, after exploring the nature, there are so many beautiful islands in Sabah like Mabul Island, Gaya Island, Tiga Island, Sipadan and the list goes on..

Regards

Awesome guys, thanks.

I ended up shelling out some money for the LP guide to Malaysia, etc, and this stuff pretty much confirms some things I was thinking and what you guys were talking about.

I ended up booking rooms for two nights when I touch down at KL, and also a room for when I get to Kota Kinablu so I have some sort of security before I find other cheaper options or more like-minds.
