I am planning a road trip from Yojarkarta/Solo to Surabaya/Mt Bromo to Bali/Gili Islands.

I am advised to take train as road is bad for bus, is it true ? Any advice ?

I will be in Indonesia for 2-3 weeks in September. Was going to fly into Bali as that is a good hub for international flights but would like to escape from the crowds. I have heard Lombok is beautiful. How much / long is it to get from Bali to Lombok and what is the best way (boat vs. flight). Any thoughts?

Are amex travelers checks accepted as currency in Bali?

Hi I am an American and our cell phones work differently than they do in the rest of the world, so just bear with me here. I need a cell phone during my time in Indonesia and Bali is my first stop. Can I just buy any cell phone at a kiosk? How do I avoid getting ripped off? What is the best company to buy from? How much do the phones cost?

Just to say that if anyone is thinking of diving in Riung - there are contact details for a divemaster in the LP Indonesia - then I'd suggest that it is only for those who are experienced and pretty confident that they can handle whatever happens.

I did two dives there. The first dive site was on a big reef on the outer island, to the north west of the port. I don't remember the name of the island but it takes about 40 mins to get there by boat and you have to go through a narrow channel…

I will be in Jakarta on July 29th, and fly to Kuala Lumpur on the early morning of the 31st. Would it be possible to take a bus to Carita (via Banten), arriving on the afternoon of the 29th, then on the 30th, hire a boat in the morning to Krakatau, then return that afternoon to Carita, and take a bus + taxi or whatever back to Jakarta to make my flight the next morning? Is this cutting it too close?? I realize I may not even be able to get to Krakatau on the 30th (due to weather, etc)…

Hello everyone, I'm going to Bali in the end of this month, basically I need a beach hut for 2-3 days just to forget work but then I would like to go see Indonesia, so if you could please help me on any of these issues I would be very thankfull:

- Any suggestion on a nice place to stay in Bali with a hut on the beach, not too far from the main places but a really hippie kind of enjoy earth place?

- "Where to go? How to go? And what to do?" - what's cool to do in Indonesia?

My husband ,myself and our 9 yo daughter are travelling to Java in August/Sept. We have arranged to meet up with a sponsor project and have to meet co ordinators in Surabaya. Does anybody know if the train is still going to Surabaya from yogya as we have been told it has been cut due to mudslide/subsidance etc. from the rio tinto mine disaster.
