Hello! My boyfriend (35) and I (22) are planning on making a trip to Indonesia in possible May or June of 2018 for 10 days. This will be the first time in Southeast Asia for the both of us. I have researched some, but would love suggestions from the Lonely Planet Community!

We are not really interested in night life, shopping, or spending a lot of time in the city. Be both surf and scuba dive and are also avid hikers. We would love to experience this side of Indonesia. Money is not an issue, but we would definitely like to keep the trip affordable. From what I have read, I think it may be better to just pick 1 island and really spend our time checking out all the places there, rather than island hopping (if we had more time, we would LOVE to check out more places!) I'm looking between Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa areas. Any suggestions as far as destination, accommodations, etc?

Thanks so much! Much love!

I would stick with one island in that timeframe, though its possible to do a bit of two.

Bali would be my choice for a first trip.It has some decent diving on the West coast, some surfing opportunities and some hiking too.It also has the infrastructure ,great food, interesting culture.

Of course this means it is quite busy with tourists in a lot of places. If you want a quieter alternative one of the other two would be better..particularly Sumbawa doesn't see many tourists at all.I don't know the island well;I've only been across it by land and around it by boat...maybe someone else can give you more info.

We loved the diving at Menjangan Island in the North-West of Bali. You could combine it with climbing the Ijen-vulcano on East Java as well. Or maybe visit the turtles in the rainforest in Sukamade.
We did a touristic, but very pretty and relaxed downhill cycling tour on the East of Bali (Bali Eco Cycling). We also loved rafting (like the Obama's :) and visited the pretty Air Banjar hotsprings on Bali.
If you combine Bali with East Java, you don't have to travel too far and you see a variety of places

From my opinion Bali , Raja Ampat Islands , Gili Islands ,Bunaken , Flores Island , Banda Islands , Bangka-Belitung Islands , Wakatobi Islands , Lombok ,Ternate Island are the best islands to visit in Indonesia. Ubud , Tanah Lot , Seminyak , Pura Besakih ,Kuta Beach, Pura Luhur Uluwatu are the best places to visit in Bali.
