Call me dyslexic but I cannot seem to register all the wonderful info on the web. I am going to Bali for a week on a budget - never been there before and travelling on my own.
I would like some where quite by the water (safe for a girl) where I can simply laze and have a good read. Also not to far from the shopping spots and where food is good. Would like to take some photos, what would you recommend

If I were you, I would get a taxi from airport to Kuta. Stay there a couple of nights so you have seen it and can compare. then book a minibus from one of the many places there to go to Ubud for a couple of days, get a bicycle and explore the many ricefields all around the city. Ubud had great food and a relaxed feel, then go by minibus to Padang bai and get your books out on the white beach (ask around, easy to walk) or go snorkling at blue lagoon beach.

Yeah, I also suggest a night or two in Kuta, do your shopping, and then head for one of the quieter beaches. Padang Bai is pretty good, but for total laid back, see my info thingy in the second link below for Nusa Lembongan and Dreamland.

Oh yeah, Sanur has pretty good shopping, nice sections of beach, is way laid back compared to Kuta, but has a relative lack of budget accommodation. However some of the Bali style midrange hotels like Gazebo have prices that seem budget by western standards.
