Hi everyone,

My husband and I (two 50 year olds) are considering going to Sumatra for one month in January 2008,

We plan to fly into Medan and fly out of Padang and not take the ferries (as suggested by some posters).

Is January in the rainy season ?

Should we consider going to Sumatra in dryer months ? If so, what is the best time to visit Sumatra.

What kind of activities are recommended for January ?

Is one month too long/too short ?

Can anyone help me with an itinerary ?

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Just wrote a lot of info' and lost it all. But most of it can be found in the links below.
Here is a search of West Sumatra from Thorn Tree here and here is one for North Sumatra

Have a read and then come back with questions and I will help you devise an itinerary.

One month should be enough. Jan is rainy season, Jun should be dryer season (but this June it rained every day). A bus ride from Medan to Padang takes more than 24 hrs. (!!!) From Toba to Bukittingi (500 km) we need 17 hrs. The roads in Sumatra are horrible.
To see: Only nature

I have spent most of my time in Sumatra in Jan of many years and one can see from my photos there hasn't been much rain in those years.

Well, I am a native Minangnese. About the weather, since sumatera, especially west sumatera located in equatorial line, this province has rain everyday. So, don't get shocked if you fund that even in dry season, rain still happens. That why it's air and jungle really fresh and green. But, in west sumatera, rain usually come in early morning and afternoon. So, just wake up early, talk a walk in Bukittinggi, or Padang, and don't forget to bring umbrella.
Have a nice holiday in peaceful and gracefull West Sumatera....
