Hey friends,

we have been to Indonesia and we are coming back. After a dive safari in Raja Ampat we still have a couple of days before we will fly out of Bali again...

We were thinking either Sulawesi (since we will be flying over Makassar anyway) or Lombok since we loved the Gilis and like the idea of going further.

We are not sooo interested in diving since we will be coming from a 24/7 dive tour, but we do like animals, culture etc. what are your thoughts?

Thanks for your help!

If you had the time,I'd say Sulawesi.Around Tana Toraja for example.

But you need more than a couple of days from Makassar. Its a long journey there and back.

If you have at least 4 days, I'd choose Sulawesi and head for Tanatoraja.
Neither South Sulawesi nor Lombok is a really good place to see much wildlife, but Tanatoraja is great for unique culture.

Tana Toraja is a good recommendation for culture, but what time of the year are we talking about? It can get very wet and muddy around there in the wet season. And I agree, you should have at least 4 days as it takes quite long to get there from Makassar. Apparently the flights from Makassar to Tana Toraja have stopped again, at least I couldn't find any now.

If your flight to (through) Makassar is changeable, you could fly Sorong - Manado instead, and visit Tankoko Dua Saudara NP, where you can see black macaques, tarsiers, hornbills and other wildlife. NP entrance is only about an hour from Manado airport by car, so you could do it with just 2 nights in Manado (or better choose a place closer to the NP). Of course it can rain heavily there, too, but as far as I know, this far north-eastern end of Sulawesi receives far less rain then Tana Toraja. When I went there last time - end of March last year -, the weather was fine.

Mountainous Tanatoraja can be rainy or sunny any time of the year.
My last visit there was in January, supposedly the middle of thevrainy season, and we had bright, sunny weather for all of 5 days.
I'd visit it regardless of the season.
I wouldn't worry much about seasons elsewhere in Sulawesi either.
Lombok has more clear-cut dry vs rainy seasons.

If you have a couple of days, fly out from Bali, and loved the Gilis, I would suggest to spent the days in Bali (Nusa Lombongan for instance).
