Hi there,

My family and I are looking to go away for a week with our 80 year-old grandfather. We are looking for somewhere not heavily touristed, but also not super deserted where we could go snorkelling. We wouldn't want to stay anywhere on Java (too crowded), and hope to stay in a reasonably cheap area with lots of things to do for a family. Also not too long of a journey to get there, and hoping to stay in an area with less emphasis on activities such as hiking or camping (too taxing for our Grandpa). Any thoughts?

Thanks very much.

Bali's north comes to mind, e.g. Pemuteran, Tulamben or Lipah. Good snorkelling, and you could visit a couple temples (also a Buddhist one which looks like a smaller, newer version of Borobudur), some waterfalls, nice rice terraces, and instead of the typical hike up the Batur volcano you can drive (almost) all the way to a viewpoint north of the Batur, where you have an even nicer view (click into the picture to see it full size!) than from the top of the Batur (IMHO anyway).
