I'm in Yogya right now and I'm considering staying a few nights at Prambanan cause I would like to be able to walk around the temples very early in the morning (around 6 am) and late at night when most of the visitors have gone. But the LP says most hotels in Prambanan itself are a bit seedy. Does anyone have a recommendation for a hotel near the temples, preferably a low-budget place that is has good rooms, but a midrange place would do as well since I would stay for max 2 nights... Right now I'm considering hotel Galuh Prambanan, though I don't know how close it is to the temples but their website looks ok. Does anyone have any advise?
The other option would be to simply visit Prambanan from Yogya during the day like most people do, but I'd rather stay at Prambanan...
And if anyone wants to meet up in Yogya (this week) or Solo (next week) for a drink, just PM me...
thnx,
Ine

Hi,
Did you know the temples were extensively damaged by the earthquake of May 27th 2006 that devastated Bantul and surrounds? I had read reports that you could still visit but many were covered in wire.
Here is a link to a search I just did for you here on TT- some useful information
Here
Pamela.

Thank you Pamela. I know the temples have been damaged but they are definitely still worth the visit!
So does anyone have any info about hotels in Prambanan?
thnx,
Ine

In those other posts people ask about other hotels, but they are above my budget and they still don't give an answer whether these hotels still exist or are any good...
Anyway, I have decided to go for it. So I'll take the bus tomorrow morning to Prambanan and will try to find a decent budget place to stay in Prambanan. The worst thing that can happen is that I don't find a good hotel, but then I can still visit the temples immediately and move on to Solo the same day. If I find a good place to stay I'll post something about it for future reference ...

Yesterday I went to Prambanan. I tried to get a nice hotel, but failed. I went to the Prambanan Indah Hotel, which is mentioned in the LP, but there's only a ruin left of this place, I guess it was destroyed in the earthquake, though there were still huge signs on the road telling where this hotel is. After I went to the Vishnu hotel in the same street, but I didn't like their rooms, they didn't seem very clean, especially the bathrooms. I didn't visit any other hotels cause it was hot and I was tired of carying my backpack and the town didn't seem that nice cause it's all centred around the highway. I just visited the temples ( there is a luggage room at the entrance) and took the first bus to Solo...
The temples were nice. You could see that they were damaged in the earthquake and it's a pity that you can't go inside, but it is still worth visiting them...
Hi Ine,
Thank you so much for updating us on your travels and your discoveries re Prambanan accomodation etc. This will be very useful for future travellers and if yuo don't mind I would like to cut and paste this thread on Indahnesia where it will stay permanently. I have done that with many of the posts from Thorn Tree because eventually all the posts drop off the TT to be lost forever.
Pamela.
