Alright bromo was a success, of to banyu for iljen !
1.) How can we go best to banyu from malang ? I read vague info about a train in economy class ? Does it go straight from malang station ?
2.) Is banyuwangi a good place to go to for a visit to iljen or better bongowoso ? We want to solo,it with scooter no tour this time ! Please some concrete info if you have done it.

The economy train is Tawang Alun from Malang ML to Banyuwangi Karangasem KNE (don't go to Banyuwangibaru if you intend to do Ijen). Across the station there are guesthouses, homestays & warungs. Enquire about motorbike rentals from them. You can also join a shared taxi/minibus shuttle from Blueflame or Alvaro Cahyo etc. Tawang Alun usually arrives at about midnight & the shared taxi/minibus will depart not long after this.

Why not go from banyuwangi to iljen ? We want to rent a scooter to drive to it and also need to take the ferry there afterwards ? I heard from friends that they did it the same way.
I hope this article will help you to explore Kawah Ijen

Karangasem station is the closest station to reach kawah Ijen and still in Banyuwangi area.

*thanks I get it now. Our guesthouse is at baru above 4 km named homestay panorama. so for us it is better to get off at baru but i understand why. There seems to be nothing.l more around the, ferry area. Thanks for quick replies !

Correct we booked the train to banyuwangi. 68k roupie for one. Economy class only. We will get a manual scooter to hike the mountain ourslçelves =)! Thanks good article for info.

Economy class only. It was ok. You can be seated 3 in a row facing three others and it would be a problem because there is no space then but for us the train wasnt full and then it was alright for the 8hrs ride from, malang to banyuwangi. There are two stations. Baru and karangasem. We took baru because our homestay was near this place but otherwise best to go to karangasem .
