Hi all,

I'm a humanitarian worker based in Nias who's about to start a holiday. Just looking for travel partners for an upcoming trip to the Mentawais, 21 May- 4 June. Debating whether to start in Sipora or Siberut and then will take it from there. I'm bringing a bodyboard, but really want to seek out and support the local families instead of the surf resorts. I speak a bit of Bahasa and am up for an adventure. Please post if you'll be around the same place at around the same time!

Joe

Sorry , you sent me a message asking for info about accom at surf locations . I had trouble with the computer . So to add what I wrote on the pm - .
If you start at Sipora you have to get another boat from Tuipijat to get down the coast to katiet (near the surfing spots) where there is lossman . Note that as well as delays getting boat to and from Sipora you may have delays if you are unlucky with boats to and from katiet .
From Siberut there are the islands of NYANG NYANG ( 1 and half hours boat trip from Muara Siberut) and KARANGMAJAT ( 2 hours boat trip) . At Nyang Nyang you can stay in primitive accom in one village , you have to bring your own food and cook . At KARANGMAJAT at that lossman on stilts it may be posible to get help with cooking but no guarantee.

Thanks Dave,

Yeah, i just booked a ticket with SMA to Sipora. I have a couple days combined in Padang to and from the island. Any suggestions on cheap/good places to stay or things to do there? On the way back i have all day saturday and sunday.

Once on Sipora, I assume there are some motorcycle taxis or some other form of transport to get me around from there? Any idea on costs?

thanks again!

Rather than stay in Padang itself , would recommend staying at Bungus Bay perhaps at Tin tin lossman from where you can walk 2 or 3 kilometres to beautiful jungle area with waterfalls and swimming hole , its a relaxed place there and you may want to stay longer . Altho to get to the airport there would be closer places to stay .
At Sipora there is only loca town transport , there are no long distance roads . There is nothing to do or see at Tyiapijat , to get down to Katiet there is a public boat but maybe only once or twice a week . To charter a boat would cost about 100 $ . You may meet surfers you can share with though.
