The 2016 ed. of the Lonely Planet Indonesia guide claims "Gunung Kelud (1731m) is one of Java’s most active, accessible and rewarding volcanoes to visit, with a plunging crater, steaming vents and a small crater lake." However, while it mentions earlier eruptions, it doesn't mention the 2014 eruption. See: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/indonesia/gunung-kelud/introduction .

I saw a claim that access is much more limited now & you can't reach the crater. Is this correct? & is it still worth visiting if it's the only volcano you plan to visit on a trip to Indonesia with kids 8+?

Or are there better choices for a day trip near Jombang, which is where we are based for this part of our trip.
