Does anyone know if the scooters you hire in one island (Bali or Lombok) can be taken on the big inter island car ferries or do you need registration papers? Having caught the ferries before I always wondered if you could rent a scooter for a month and explore other islands before returning via the same means. Thanks.

It is possible, but you need to arrange it with the people you're renting from. Normally when renting you get a 'temporary' registration paper for the rental. If you want to take the bike on the ferry you need the full registration papers, so you have to get those from the owner.
