I would say forget your friend- you don't need a nervous companion to travel with. Go have a great time and come back here and post your impressions. Pamela

In 1998 just after the fallof Suharto, I went to Indonesia amidst travel warnings from all western embassies. I was twenty-six, and it was the first travelling I'd ever done by myself. The result? It was one of the best experiences of my life. The friendly people, the palpable hope, the amazing unheralded food, volcanoes, gorgeous women, ice blue sea, ancient and enduring culture...
Since then, Indonesia has called to me over oceans. So, I'm heeding that call, albeit for a brief time, and going back in a week.
Don't fret. Keep your mind open and a smile on your lips, and you'll be in bliss.
