I travel alone using public transport, but sometimes use a car and a driver when there is no public transport.
I asked a quote for a one way one day trip of less than 210 kms from Jogjatrans, highly recommended by Lonely Planet. They ask 225 euros! The quote is in euros not in IDR.
Is this price OK or does the man want to make his month salary in one day?
How much should I pay?
Thank you for your help !

Depends on distance, but in your case 800.000 rp should be the most, I'd say.
And it may be better to negotiate with drivers once there than to book online.

Obviously, an operator highly recommended by Lp gets enough silly customers desperate to book in advance from overseas to get away with crazy prices.

Yes,do it when you are there, and bargain. ..it will be much cheaper than that quote.

Depending on island and distances I usually (last few trips)pay between 500,000 and 700,000 a day for car and driver. Your trip is pretty long distance though. ..

AFAIK it is only legal to quote a price in IDR -- so he is trying to rip you off. I would remind him of this and ask for a reasonable offer before you report him (start of bargaining dialogue). But remember that a oneway trip by car needs to include the return journey.

From Yogja to where? You can usually go distances like that by minivans("travel"). Find out where to book from your Yogja accommodation when you are there, not before you travel. Only book things in advance in peak season and then only a few days beforehand.

I have just found your other thread about going to the beach -- from what I have read here on TT the beaches are poor on Java. I would suggest spending your energies on better beaches particularly as you from Australia.

Thank you Paul,
I am now in Karimunjawa, travel mostly by public transport and take a car and a driver only when there is no public transport where I want to go or when it would take me too much time!
And yes I know the beaches are not that great in Java, I just want to see as much of this world as possible.
I travelled to 93 coyntries so far and hope to see them all before I die!

Wow -- you are doing well - I have seen quite a few but I have not counted them. Certainly, nowhere near as many. Years ago I went to Yugoslavia but I am not sure how many of today's countries I went to. I hope you enjoy them all and don't let it become an obsession. Now, I go back to places like North Sumatra and Thailand, where I have friends, for the southern hemisphere winter and am not in a hurry to tick off many more countries.

Hi laurenohoui, since you are now in Karimunjawa, how do you like the beaches there? Which island exactly do you stay on, and which hotel / guest house? How is the snorkelling?

I tried a few times to get to Karimunjawa, but in the end it never fit my other plans, so I'm still hoping to get there one not too distant day...

Agree with the others, 225 Euro is waaaaayyy tooo much for a car for a day - even if you consider that you'll have to pay the return, too. I don't think it should be more than 800,000 IDR, rather less than that.
