IMO sometimes even very touristy places can actually be quite pleasant in low / off season. Goa is a good example with picture postcard beaches in off-season with not a shack in sight and barely any other tourists. Unrecogniseable once the high season starts.

A globalised 5* multimillion dollar resort costing $500/night?

In the late 80s it was about 7000 rp a night to stay at losmens at Gili Trawangan which included dinner.

When I went to Indonesia in 1991, I didnt go to the Gilis as they seemed to be overhyped already.
