Make no mistake about it, forget your imagination of a tropical paradise, close that image search of white sand and tropical beach - GILI TRAWANGAN IS A DUMP !!!

It is actually borderline disgusting.

The fact that this island is so hyped, and one of the 'Top 10 islands in Asia' blows my mind.

Agreed, YEARS ago, it was a bit of a paradise, did have that tropical allure, and still had some white sandy beaches - but fast forward to today - July 2017, and the place is a dump.
Seriously, I walked around the whole entire island yesterday, and there in not one stretch of sand that you could call 'white' (its mainly grey, scattered with liter and broken coral).

Additionally, for those who have visited before, you may be unaware, in Feb 2017, the government made all the business rip-down every-single building and structure on the beach side of the road around the whole island ! (Stating that they didn't comply with building/planning rules etc etc..)
What this means is, the whole beach side of the main st, (like, the actual damn beach!) is basically dirty area, after dirty area of where former structures where. It's horrible.

My girlfriend who had never been here before said 'it looks like all the tourists left in 1995, and the place has just decayed'.

Compounding that, is the constant construction of new buildings on the other side of the main rd, making the whole environment dusty and gross.
It's really as far from 'idealistic' as you can get.
We were expecting to stay a week, but on the first day after 6 hrs, I was like 'lets GTF out of here'.
Until then we are staying in our Villa by the pool, regrettably stepping foot out into the street unless we have to.

We are not precious at all, I've traveled 70+ countries in some of the most hostile environments around the world, and I also live on the beach at home in Australia, so take this as solid travel advice, lower your expectation, and be prepared for a disappointing shock if you still choose to go to Gili T.

Not too surprised to read this. I haven't been to any of the Gilis for years but even then I didn't think they were anything special. I recently was in Kuta (lombok) and Selong Belanak and they were pretty grotty too. But it could lso depend on when you go.

Because of the social media adverts the Gilis are the biggest beach draw in Indonesia. More than 2,000 people a day go from Bali to tiny Gilis on the fast boats over, so you can imagine the pressures on these islands. Also there is no real local population so no one really cares enough I guess. The tearing down of the illegal beach side structures might be for the best in the long run.

I went in 2001 and Gili T. didn't seem all that appealing then. (Gili Air was fine). 16 years later and now a hop, skip and a jump from Australia/Bali, it's inevitable, given typical Indonesian (lack of) planning that it's a hole.

PICTURE of Gili Trawangan when it was nice. Although these former paradises are spoiled I am preserving them in digital form.

Are there still places for snorkeling from the beach on Gili T ( similar to Lipe(Thailand) sunrise beach or Hoga (Indonesia) ?

You can still snorkel, but it's nothing like it once was...a lot of the coral was destroyed (combination of inexpert tourists and Indonesians fishing with explosives) ......so the fish etc were also badly affected. ..

We were there in '93 and I didn't find it "paradise" at all, even back then. We had slotted in 10 days for a Gili retreat. We stayed 1 night on Trawangan, left in a hurry and ended up going over to Gili Air which was a bit nicer, but still not really that exciting. We stayed two nights there and disappointedly left for Bali... never been back.

P.S. The diving was disappointing too.

Mass social media creates mass social ignorance. Turn it off to find reality.

This is less than five minute boatride from paradise lost. https://www.scottdunn.com/luxury-holidays/asia/far-east/indonesia/lombok/the-oberoi-lombok

In response to #5

Gili Meno was still nice a couple of years ago and had by far the best snorkelling of all 3 Gilis.

Every group has its own dynamics, if you can't see the idiot then it's probably you.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think :-D
