Is there any food you should not eat in JK coming from Canada you never have to worry about what to eat ut is there foods in JK you should avoid or be careful with? My husband going for 1 month for work and has to either eat out or buy food and cook it at staff house. Any suggestions or information for him to know?

I'd suggest he steers clear of the bakso (meatballs) sold on the street. There's been recent tv reports that some sellers preserve the meat by coating it in embalming fluid.
Last week there was also a story on street sellers of watermelon. Many sellers inject the whole watermelon with a syringe of red liquid. They then cut open the watermelon and sell the bright red, fresh and sweet looking portions. The red liquid may just be sugary syrup, but who knows? This one makes sense, as numerous times I've bought what looked a sweet melon with a bright red interior, only to have it taste very dull.

That story about bakso was around about 18 months ago and bakso sales plummeted and lots of bakso sellers went out of business. It was largely discredited at the time and I doubt it has been much of a problem since.

Bukanbaksobasi - The story was on the news again last week. The story your referring you to about 18 months ago concerned only Bakso tikus which most foreigners are unlikely to try anyway. Make what you like of it.

Ahhhhhhhhh, yes, the Tikus.
Mmmmmmm, I wouldn't say what that is, but some people will eat it, while others won't.
Does it have the same meaning in Malaysia as in Indo?

Street hawker food on the carts- (maaf Ibu dan Pak kaki lima)- is a big gamble!
The bakso (meatball and noodle soup) and sate (meat on skewers) are infamous for being poorly stored and prepared, mixed with borax and of dubious animal origin. 'nuff said.
I would trust gado-gado and nasi/mie goreng if your husband is feeling adventurous becaude it's mostly vegetables.
So, to avoid this, Jakarta is packed with mid0range restaurants serving Indonesian food, let alone the numerous "western" places- Hard Rock cafe, Chicago Ribs, McD's and KFC plus all the restauants at hotels and food courts at the big shopping plazas.
(oh yeah, avoid the ice)
