Hi there

I will go to Indonesia in November for three weeks.

First I will dive in Bali for about one week (should be good for beginners).

After that I'm not shure if I should go to Flores or Lombok.

Flores would be great for Komdo National Park. I would love to dive there as well but I'm not shure if it is possible as beginner. Also hiking would be cool in Flores.

Lombok i don't have that much information yet, only Gilis (to touristy) and Mout Rinjani.

Would would you prefer?

I like:
- Nature
- Hiking
- Diving
- Beaches
- Exploring an island with motorbike, scooter

I don't like crowed places.

I'm travelling alone.

Regards
Andri

I would say Flores also for scenery, hiking and culture. The diving is much better than in Lombok.

I am not so sure about the diving since you will have so recently obtained your beginning certification, at least in Labuan Bajo. We both had over 50 dives under our belts and yet several dive operators refused to take us. They said the dives were too advanced due to strong currents. It took going to 3 places that refused us before on the 4th try finding a dive shop that would. The funny thing is that out of the 6 dives we took, 2 were in places that seemed easy enough for a beginner. The waters were quite calm and the dives good, though nothing spectacular. The other 4 dives were challenging due to strong currents and 2 strong enough to be classified as drift diving. I could easily see why they might not want to take on beginning divers. The difficult dives were definitely spectacular.

In Labuan Bajo there are many, many dive operators so keep asking. If you are turned down at one the next may agree to take you to calmer sites. In Maumere there are not as many dive shops, but the diving was calmer there too. Maybe not as spectacular as in Labuan Bajo, but they are certainly very good.

I think all shops propose Open Water classes in Labuan Bajo so they definitely accept beginners. You might not be taken to every spots though, depending on the conditions of the day. Just ask around. To my opinion, best place underwater in Indonesia just after Raja Ampat. There is no way Lombok can compete with Flores when it comes to diving.

In Flores, if you stay close to sea level (like Komodo, Labuan Bajo or Maumere) it is quite scorched during the dry season, not much green to be seen unless you get to higher ground. In November, I guess it's gonna depend on how early is the rainy season this year.

Lombok has the upper end when it comes to waterfall (the ones in Senaru are quite amazing) and beaches. Rent a motorbike in South Lombok and you can visit 4 or 5 amazing and mostly empty beaches in one or two days. Flores has great beaches too but you have to take boat or long ride to reach one. The access is much easier in Lombok.

On Flores side, you got more trekking options : you can climb Inerie or Egon volcano in one day and you are very likely to have the trail for yourself. Many hike available to reach traditional villages around Bajawa or to go to Wae Rebo South of Ruteng. Traditional culture is more preserved in Flores too.

If I had to pick only one I would go for Flores especially if you want a quieter place. You could also manage to get a bit of each if you limit yourself to Komodo and Bajawa in Flores for instance. You can reach Labuan Bajo from Mataram by bus and ferry easily (expect to leave Mataram in the end of the afternoon, overnight bus to Bima in East Sumbawa and a 6 or 7 hour ferry to Labuan Bajo). Or take a flight back to Bali and connect to Labuan Bajo.
