Hey guys, at bali now in ubud. Great time but bad weather. We want to move on to lombok and afterwards we need to return to ubud for our last night before going home. We have a rough 4-5 days to spend on lombok.

  1. We saw the ferry goes to 2 sides. Pemenang or lembar. We want to head to kuta first so we think a short flight should be better because it takes us to praya barat. Can anyone tell me if this is a good idea ?

  2. We will go from kuta to either tetebatu or senaru. We want tetebatu for monkey forest, but is this do able with transport or is it super expensive ? Then we also need to get back for a ferry or another flight.

  3. Is it easy to go to tetebatu and see other stuff like the waterfalls or is it rather a no tourist town ?

  4. Where is it best to snorkel in the sea ? Gilis is a dump i heard, but we want to either do it on bali or lombok .. any suggestions out of experience please ? We have no clue.

The best snorkelling is around Pulau Menjangan in the Bali Barat NP.

Menjangan offers good snorkelling as Laszlo wrote, but you can't stay on the island, so you'll need transport every time you go there.

I would rather recommend Tulamben. There is the wreck of the Liberty just offshore, which you can see even from the surface, although you'll certainly enjoy it a lot more if you are able to dive down a couple meters. There's lots of fish in and around the wreck.

Further east, towards the Matahari Tulamben Resort and the small cape east of it, there are some corals and also sort of an underwater temple worthwhile snorkelling or free diving. I even saw a ribbon eel there once.

Sorry I can't help with Lombok, never been there.

Snorkeling at Tulamben is just ok, nothing like the amazing snorkeling at Menjangan. It is true that because it's a national Park you have to pay the fee plus take a registered boat plus licensed guide. I always do a private boat so I have maximum flexibiility. Depending on how many people you have it's not much more or perhaps less than having a dive operation take you with a boatload of other people.

Definitely fly to Lombok, if you really want to go there, in iffy weather I would NOT take one of the boats. Supposedly snorkeling is better around the smaller gilis to the south.

Gili Meno is still OK - loads of turtles, usual selection of tropical fish and patches of nice coral and you can snorkel all the way around the island. I didn't find any good snorkelling off mainland Lombok. Nusa Lembongan also has interesting patches. On Bali I liked Jemeluk coral gardens in Amed.

Every group has its own dynamics, if you can't see the idiot then it's probably you.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think :-D
