I am not sure about that. As far as I know there is still malaria in East Java. If you only stay there for a couple of days I would not take malariatblets but if you stay for a longer time, especially in the rainyseason AND depending on where in East Java I should (re)consider taking tablets.

Is your answer for Bali or for East Java? Because although very close, the malariarisk is not the same on both parts of Indonesia.

There is supposedly no malaria in Bali or Java, including East Java. I think - and this is a completely unqualified opinion, so ignore it altogether if you choose - the difference is that unlike other parts of the country (Papua, Sulawesi etc.) malaria is not endemic in Java, that is it's not widespread, not there all the time, but it can occassionally pop up.... But anyway I live in East Java, travel around the province a lot, take no prophylaxis and haven't caught malaria and have not heard of malaria cases here (though there's plenty of dengue)...
