I plan to visit Indonesia and spend possibly 60+ days travelling around

I get the impression applying for a 60 day visa from home (UK) might be a little hassle, (no accommodation planned, just backpacking around etc) so guess a paid 30 day VOA is best with option to extend for a further 30 days.

I just wanted to clarify a couple of things I am still a little confused with… so I plan to book a one way flight to Indonesia, (as not sure when I want to return to UK as packed in work). It seems easy enough and cheap, (£20) to book a flight out to say Singapore (which I clearly don’t plan to use). Would I have to book this flight, for say on the 29th day, i.e. is this a requirement for my initial 30 day visa, or can I book this cheap flight for say the 59th day i.e in preparation for my extended visa?

Also, once I have extended my visa and leave after 60 days, (let’s say a cheap flight to Singapore), am I right in thinking returning on another 30 day visa will be fine?

To extend the paid voa, you need to show a ticket out.. So the 59th day...

Medan to penang is often a cheapie out in air Asia.... Or pontianak to kuching on AA..

I guess I would book the 59th as airlines are tightening up and a one way is not as possible as it used to be... and would satisfy the requirement of a flight out to board the plane or a visa extension

OK thanks, just to confirm so landing in Indonesia at immigration on my one way ticket, purchasing a 30 day visa, (which i plan to extend) will be fine with a flight ticket out on the 59th day?

Indonesian immigration is unlikely to check whether or not you have a flight out; you're much more likely to have this checked by the airline that flies you into Indonesia. I have no personal experience as to whether or not a "59 day ticket" is okay.

In regards to your second question, yes, you should be fine to go back to Indonesia for another 30 days.

Note that there are some regional cities in the countries around Indonesia where it's quite easy to get a 60-day visa. A 60-day visa not only allows you to stay for 60 days without going through the hassle of an extension, but it can also be extended multiple times. If you want to spend longer in Indonesia, it's a good way to go.

I initially went to Indonesia for just 2 months, but have somehow ended up spending over a year of my life in the country. It's not a place that you get easily bored of...

I suggest you buy the 60 Day Turis Visa before you arrive. You do not need to have pre booked accommodation, just a ticket out of Indonesia eg Medan to KL.

If you go down the VOA route, you still will have to have a ticket out of Indonesia to get the 30 day extension.

To get the 30 day extension, especially in Bali, based on my personal experience is a lengthy and painful experience.

A ticket out for the 59th day should be fine for entry and also necessary tor the extension. The extension process, ese for a VoA shouldn't be too hard - while it may be lengthy in busy Bali, some offices even do it in a day.

I would also go with the 59th day flight out.And do the extension in a quieter place than Bali ;-)

Then you can either use the flight or just throw it away..

Thanks a lot all! I don't plan to visit Bali (was there over 25 years ago), i assume many tourists! Probably be Sumatra and over to Sulawesi or Maluku (early days of planning)

Maluku, especially Ternate, is a good place to get an extension - may even be done the same day.

This is where planning is key. Initial rough plan is cheap flight to Medan from UK. Then make my way (slowly) through Sumatra and grab a flight out at Jakarta... now i understand it is best to organise extension with about 10 left on visa, so this would give me only 3 weeks max travelling through Sumatra? ... It will obviously take a bit of planning, maybe a 60 day visa organised from UK might be worth it... Thanks again for feedback :-)
