Visa-free stay can't be extended.
Visa on arrival plus extension is max 60 days.
The main reason to get a 60 days visa is that it can be extended beyond 60 days.
Singapore gives 60 day visas but it either involves using an expensive agent or a possibly similarly expensive wait of a few days, apparently.
i wrote an email to the embassy in Johor and they replied:

How long do you want to spend in Indonesia? Where do you wan to go? That would help determine your visa options.
Note that traveling from Peninsula Malaysia to Sarawak, via boat through Indonesia, is time consuming. There's a direct ferry from Pulau Bintan (you can get there by direct boat from Johor) only once every 2 weeks, I believe, and it takes a long time to do the trip. The alternative options, which are more frequent, have you traveling via Java.

still working on it.

I guess so.

Thirdeye4, thanks for the updated info. Did they not give you any indication of processing time and cost?

In response to my own question...I have been informed by staff at the Indonesia Consulate, Johor Bahru, that the processing time is 2 working days and the cost is MYR205.

Hi, I saw this thread and just wanted to confirm that the consulate in Kuching is indeed issuing 60 day visas as of today, January 25th. All that is required is your passport, copy of itinerary showing arrival and departure, a passport-sized photo, and bank statement or credit card (note, the agent I sat down with specified that it has to be a credit card rather than a bank or ATM card) as well as 205 MR (≈$50 USD.) I arrived right before lunch, asked for an application, and had my visa processed in an hour and a half. Hope this helps!

I also got a 60day tourist visa in Kuching today. I was asked for (1) a copy of air ticket for flight in, (2) same for flight out, (3) a bank statement with at least USD1,500 in remaining balace, and (4) one photo. Drop off 9-12:00; pick up 16-17:00; same day service. Take bus K8 if you wish to curb taxi expenses!
I got a 60 days Indonesia visa in Bangkok, Thailand. You need to show a bank statement (a debit card is also ok, I took a screenshot of my bank APP total amount on my phone, sent to my email address and print it in a shop next to the embassy of Indonesia), a return ticket (just buy a refundable flight ticket that you will refund once you got the visa OR buy a cheap ticket like an Air Asia ticket from Jakarta to Kuala Lumpur, or any ticket you want), 50 American dollars in cash (there are many money exchange kyosks next to the embassy, anyway I had the dollars from before, didn't change there). The embassy is open from 9am to noon for giving them the paper, and after 3 days (in the afternoon) you can go to get your passport back with the 2 months visa.
I did the visa in March 2018, 10 days ago. Cheeers
