I'm heading off to Bali next year, I want to spend 7-10 days in a nice family friendly Balinese style resort. Essentially staying away from the cold and clinical American (Western) chains.

A huge pool area is a must as I've got a young family and away from Kuta too.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

The best way to approach it is first budget and location. Even Balinese owned and operated hotels like Komaneka and Maya Ubud are fairly modern. There are lots of non-american multi-property companies that operate like Oberoi, Samaya, Como, Padma, etc. Kuta is but one tiny sliver of Bali so you have about 5,000 other square kilometers of island to look at! Google maps is a big help.

I'm aware of all of this. I'm looking for recommendations not generic advice.

Well, if you ask a general question you will get a general answer. To get specific recs it's better to give a budget, area of Bali (not just "not Kuta")..Kuta is but less than 1% probably of the areas in Bali that you can stay. Do you want Tuban, Seminyak, Uluwatu, Candi Dasa, Amed, Padang Bai, Ubud, Canggu, Payangan, Bedugul, Munduk, Tulamben, Les, Lovina, Pemuteran, Medewi, Jasri? The possibilities are many.
