Zhangjiajie in Summer

Country forums / North-East Asia / China

I´m thinking about visiting Zhangjiajie in September. Is it a good idea? Can I see those incredible pillar mountains (Avatar movie)?

Are you planning on September or some time in Summer?

September is fairly hot and humid with a good chance of rain. Summer is hotter, more humid, and has a higher chance of rain.

The pillars in Avatar were based on those in Zhangjiajie, but a lot of it was CGI. You will see Zhangjiajie, not the mountains from Avatar. Google image search might give you ideas, although many of those are taken on rare perfect days from aerial vantage points.

Yes, I obviously know that they are different. My question is: Can I see those mountains of Zhangjiajie in September or is it too foggy?

I visited Zhangjiajie in September. I had the typical cloudy sky and some hazy air but could see the pillars very well. But for photography sun and blue sky would have been better. That's probably not what you will get in September.

September isnt the best time to view them, but it also isnt the worst. It isnt a huge differecial either. It's a very foggy part of the world. Add to that China's legendary pollution and any day any time of year you risk not seeing much.
