Hi,

We are planning a trip to Taiwan in December and planning to spend two nights to visit Taroko gorge. We are planning to take a train to get to the base for the gorge and then a taxi to actually visit the gorge.
In terms of ease of getting a taxi, which base would make sense? Would Hualien be the only option? Can hotels in other areas arrange a taxi easily for a day?
How much would a taxi cost, say 6-8 hr for 4 people? A small sedan car is fine.

Thanks.
Ansh

Hi Ansh.

We stayed in Hualien. But I think there are some places to stay at the station, which is nearer to the gorge.

There are certainly taxis there.Though we took public transport for most of it...there are buses to and from Hualien.

Hi Luca, how's it going?

Thanks for your input. We actually booked a hotel in Chongde to try to be closer to nature. Any idea on that area?

nothing is in stone yet so open to more inputs. I will continue to consider Hualien esp if it makes transportation easier

I choosed Hualien too.
It's not a problem to be there because you have buses all the days to reach Taroko.
You can catch it between the Gorge and the city.
I used Rough guidebook. You should have some informations inside it.
It's not too late to read it.
Bradt is disapointing for a trip there.

If you bring a tent, you can camp in the gorge... For free, even!

I don't know the price of an accommodation outside Hualien but you can stay cheaply in Hualien.
I have some doubts using a tent you need to carry with you if it's for using it only for few nights ...
But everything remains a question of choice...

Hi and thanks for all the replies.

Great to hear, Luc, hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!

I'll look into the bus to the gorge again. I thought the taxi for 4 people would be a better deal but I will check out the buses again.

and no camping for us! price is not too much of an issue up to NTD 2500 per room per night is good (Will need 2 rooms)

You can buy a pass for the bus (one or two days) and then use it all the day(s).
I think it will be a better deal than a taxi but it's only my opinion.
