Traveling from Kathmandu to Tibet then onto China

Country forums / North-East Asia / Tibet

I am looking at flying into Kathmandu around 22-24 Oct, spend time getting a permit and tour organised something like a7- 8 day overland from Kathmandu to Lhasa, then continue by train into China to Xian from where I will probably fly to South Korea.

What I am wondering, is it possible to travel on into China from Lhasa with the Tibet permit, I realise they are only issued for about 15 days which will be fine, as I only plan to stop in Xian for max 2 nights before exiting China to South Korea.

If anyone else is going to be looking at doing a similar trip from Kathmandu to Lhasa towards the end of October then perhaps we could make a group. I am quite flexible with dates and plans.

And if anyone has any recommendations on tour companies, prices etc would be great.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

your plan is very possible and many people do the same thing. all tibet travel permits are group permits. however, the group permit can and should only have your name on it. this will allow you to split from the rest of the group you've traveled from kathmandu with. when applying in ktm make sure you request that you are the only person on your group permit and ask the travel agent to attempt to get as many days as possible on your ttp. 15 days is generally the minimum, and a few travelers have reported getting 28 days, though don't count on this. you need to leave china before your ttp expires.

Most likely you will be given a group Chinese visa that is valid for only a few days longer than your Tibet tour lasts. You probably will only be left with a small amount of time to travel in mainland China. Currently, it is not possible to extend a group Chinese visa anywhere in China, which means that you would need to leave China, most likely to Hong Kong, and apply for a new Chinese tourist visa. For this reason, it is a much better option to travel from China to Tibet and then on to Nepal. For more information about traveling from Nepal to Tibet, read the following article...
