Tokyo and Osaka for 1 week

Country forums / North-East Asia / Japan

Hello everyone!
I’ll go to Japan for 1 week (last week of June). I will fly into Tokyo and planning
to stay there for 2 or 3 days. After Tokyo I wanna go to Osaka.
Unfortunately I don’t know much about Tokyo….
If anyone can give me some recommendations about what I definitely should do/
have to see there I would be very happy. Basically I wanna do some shopping, I know it is kinda expensive but I don’t think ill be back in Japan in the near future.
I was reading in the forum and decided to stay somewhere close to Shinjuku.
Is that the place to be??
Can anyone suggest a nice hotel in that area (budget ~ 120$ US).
Since I broke my digital camera last week I was planning to buy a new one.
Any suggestions where?

Thanks a lot for your answers!!!

Have you thought about going to Kyoto and/or Nara? In my opinion much better places to see than in Tokyo or Osaka. I think camaras in Japan will be more expensive than in your home country (whatever country that it).

Thanks a lot for your suggestion, but i already have been there. So this time i wanna see Tokyo and Osaka.
I currently live in South Korea. Electronics are cheap here but some friends told me if i am not looking for the latest models
it might be cheaper in Japan.

I'd recommend the Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo. It is nice and a good value, in the business district of Shinjuku so not too overwhelming but still very central. As for things to do in Tokyo... where to begin? Shinjuku is a lot like Times Square: overwhelmingly high-end commercial. It's worth checking out, but I prefer areas like Shimokita-zawa (a few stops from Shinjuku on the Odakyu line). It is a charming, French-influenced little neighborhood full of cafes and thrift stores if you ever want an escape.

Asakusa has some lovely shrines and temples and it is right near Ueno where the famous park, zoo and many other shrines and temples are. That is northern Tokyo but I'd set aside a full day for sightseeing there.

Also, I agree with the others, if you have time while you are in the Kansai area, Kyoto and Nara are worth checking out. Osaka is fun mostly for the night life but it is also uniquely slummy for Japan. The castle is decent but not thrilling.

Kyoto on the other hand features the Fushimi Inari (a beautiful orange gate lined 2 hr hike), Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, Silver Pavilion, Golden Pavilion, Nijo-dori, Heian-jingu and garden, etc. So many stunning attractions.

Feeding the deer in Nara Park and beholding the giant bronze and gold Buddhas at Daibutsu-den are also not to be missed.

For camera prices, look at Yodobashi and BicCamera. Though the sites are in Japanese, put the camera model (in English) in the search engine and you should get a listing with price. The on-line price is usually the maximum you should aim to pay, as local stores often do specials in response to competition and maker's incentives. Also most goods come with rebate points, redeemable against future purchases (usually from next day).
Most models sold in Japan for the domestic market only come with Japan-only warranty. You pay more for export models and international guarantee.
If you are looking a cheaper but decent model, look at Nikon Coolpix L11 or L12. Yodobashi.com have them for 17,800 yen (with 15% rebates) and 24,800 yen (15%).

The Kadoya Hotel, about 5 mins from Shinjuku station has very comfortable rooms within your budget. I stayed there about a month ago and it was fine, price about $80 for room. Shinjku is amazing at night though the seedier side can be a tad intimidating.
There are soem great bars in Shinjuku and terrifric small restaurants if you really look, not everything is hugely expensive.
I'd echo the going to Asakusa area, the market there is terrific and so's the shrine. Also if you want just a little peace get out to Rikegi Garden (I think that was the name).
