Rainy season- yeah, right...

Country forums / North-East Asia / Japan

I was told yesterday that the rainy season had started, and with all that rain it did look like it had settled in. I checked the forecast for the next week and sure enough- for the next two days rain was forecast, followed by overcast for the rest of the week. Looks like it's going to be a gloomy one, I thought. Woke up today and the sky is beautifully clear, with a forecast for fine weather not only today, but for most of next week as well!

I've heard about climate change affecting the Japanese rainy season but it seems like it's about time to change the name... it rains more in any given month where I'm from (Auckland) than it has in the rainy season here as long as I can remember. Not that I'm complaining, mind! Enjoy the fine weather this rainy season, folks!

according to mountain folks wisdom, years with little snow can be followed by mega monsoons.
may be hokum, but dont throw away your gumboots just yet.

Last few rainy seasons weren't much. If it is a sunny day, head to a beach. People here are too fearful to go to the beach anytime before August so you can have a pretty empty beach. What's the weather like this Sunday? I am headed to Wakayama if there is no rain.

Should be fine in Wakayama tomorrow too. Some cloud later in the day. I would go to the beach if the beaches around Tokyo were worth going to, but they aren't really, sadly. No sign of the mega monsoon yet but it could be just around the corner. Maybe we'll be hit with some big typhoons this year instead.

Hear hear
The declaration of the commencement of the rainy season is .... well .... questionable.
My futons have been on the veranda all morning!

Come all ye unbelievers of "Bai U" down here in southern parts of Uchina/Okinawa/Ryukyus/Nan Sei Islands for a triple shot of steam and non-stop mildew...interspersed every other week with a 24 hr. respite of sunshine! Here....specifically Miyako is a veritable "Tsuyu/Bai U" Paradise at the moment...though the end of the rainy season is expected to be proclaimed within the next 10 odd dayz!

The rainy season could just be late in coming. Here in Taiwan, our plum rain season has arrived later than usual (it usually occurs about a month prior to Japan's), but since it's come, it has poured! I'm not sure if this same weather front continues northward to Japan, but judging from BBB2's observations about the current climatic conditions in Okinawa, it just might be doing so. Keep that umbrella handy, just in case!

I lived in Tokyo for 10 years from the late 80's to the late 90's, and some tsuyu years were wetter than others during that time (some summers were also unseasonably cool, while others were hellishly hot).

I think the rainy season was officially declared started about the 12th, and then it just up and disappeared. The humidity was only about 35% yesterday as well according to the humidity-measuring-thingy in our living room. Even I was prompted to hang out the futon. Really strange for this time of year.

I've also been here 10 years and don't remember a tsuyu like this. Usually by now anything paper would be curling up at the edges with dampness and it would be getting hard to dry washing. Not so. Anyway I'm not worrying about it too much ;-)

There is apparently a La Nina effect this year.
A drought committee has already been established.
THere is sua shortage of water in Kyushu, Shikoku and Sanyo
forecast.

8

Ah, I did hear something about La Nina. I suppose some crops that need a decent rainy season will be affected too.

9

Well, enjoy the fine weather while it lasts. Arigato for the info.

Cheers!!!
