Mandarin characters for TibetCountry forums / North-East Asia / Tibet
The first of the two Mandarin characters for Tibet is "West". What is the second? Thanks.
²Ø (z¨¤ng): hide, conceal, store. | 1
"Zang" is the word for the Tibetan nationality. The word "West" is used because it refers to the western region of the Tibetan nationality (which also extends east into Sichuan, Qinghai, and parts of Gansu and Yunnan). | 2
Some Tibetans may be offended by translating their name as "Treasures in the West". | 3
"Treasures in the West" is a literal translation adapted to the name Xizang. It didn't give rise to the name Xizang. | 4
Yeah well, like I said, it's the romantic in me...and it's the landmass I'm romanticizing, not the people. Then again, as an example, I remember weijing (ζ¾«) as "flavor surprise" (ζ¾ª) so my Chinese is all over the map. | 5
Hi Chengdude, then how about romanticizing Shui2zhu3 niu2rou4? (water-boiling beef), it may well another "surprise"! | 6
