Low season in Tibet...A great time to go

Country forums / North-East Asia / Tibet

The past couple of weeks I have received many emails from people asking me if the low season (winter) is a good time to travel to Tibet or not. I wrote an article today giving my opinion on the subject and thought I would post it here for others who are considering traveling to Tibet this winter. Read the following link for my opinion on travel in Tibet during the low season:

Low season: The time to go to Tibet

Hi, in your blog you mention, that western Sechuan is coldest in winter. What about the temperature in this area in October and early November? I want to go as far as Dege (via Trola-pass). I'm not sure, how much warm clothes I should bring with me. But I think, clothes, which are warm enough for winter in central Europe should be OK, right? Is a warmer sleeping bag for budget hostels a ggod idea? Usually I only use a silk sleeping bag, when a room is not too clean.
Thanks.

Western Sichuan can be very cold during the winter, but the coldest regions of the Tibetan Plateau are western Tibet (Ngari), northern Tibet (Nagchu) as well as the high elevation prefectures of Yushu and Golog in Qinghai province. These are the coldest regions of the Tibetan world in winter.

October and November, the night time temperatures in the Dege area can be quite cold, especially on the Trola pass. During the day, Dege will not be tool cold during October and November. Dege is relatively low for Tibet and sits at about 3200m. Expect day time highs to be between 10 and 12C with sunshine. Clothes that you would wear in central Europe during winter should be fine.

There is really no need to bring a sleeping bag to this region. All of the hotels and guesthouses will have plenty of blankets...some even will have electric blankets. If you want to bring a sleeping bag as an additional layer, a thin one would be fine.
