I would really like to see the mountains, whether by horseback or foot. Any cheap accomodation tips very well recieved as well! Thank you very much

| notabadoldbloke13:32 UTC28 Jul 2007 | 6 days is not long so hire a small car - a toyota platz is ideal - go up to shiretoku 5 lakes national park for some nice walks then go to mt akan national park and then down to lake mashu (hardly mountainous but great walking) - all the youth hostels on hokkaido are cheap and offer good accomodation -also from wakanai you could take a ferry over to rishiri is and climb mt rishiri - leave your car at wakanai overnight as cars r xpensive on the ferry - you can leave your wallet on the seat - it will still b there on your return

Just outside Sapporo (in 2 locations) there are horseback riding spots. One is actually called the Mustang Ranch. Can't recall the other. One is close to Ishikari to the north, and the other is more to the west.
INO's hostel seems popular if you are into hostels.

| glenski11:03 UTC29 Jul 2007 | er, talisp, you said you were coming only 2 days after you posted, then asked what there was to see. Come to explore. Why not? It just seems strange not to have the vaguest hint of a clue what there is, so close to departure date. Enjoy exploring.
BTW, there are two other horseback riding clubs in the area. I don't know their names, but they are more popular than the ones I mentioned earlier. Check at the information center at the main JR station. I assume you're going to drop by there anyway.
