Has anyone actually gotten their permit "officially" checked

Country forums / North-East Asia / Tibet

Hi,

From what I've read in the forum so far, it seems like no one has ever had their permit "officially" checked. and those who never saw their permit seem to have travelled through Tibet without any problems.

Since I am on a very tight budget and have been reading numerous posts of suggesting not bother with the permit. I am wondering if anyone out there as actually been "officially" checked for permit in the recent days. I will be there sometimes in Sept.

Thanks!

Was in Tibet from 8th to 20th August and permit was checked several times by authorities and places we stayed. Was however doing trip to Everest base camp where they are currently being really strict so may well be different in other parts of Tibet.

I just came up from Golmud yesterday on the train, no one checked a permit, I bought my ticket at the train station 143 RMB for hard seat the day before I left (tall white guy I don't look chinese). There were empty seats as well so I probably could have got one the same day. No one has asked for at the guesthouses in Lhasa. I you need seperate permits for most trips outside of Lhasa but I'm not sure what effect not having one will have on getting those I doubt it will be a problem. There were also anoucements on the train in English if you didn't have a "letter" from the TAR you should go to a place in the station in Lhasa to get one "to garantee your rights and better serve you as a tourist" I just ignored this and left the station but I suppose if I needed to get one I could go back to the station and try to get one.

Doby, I think it's quite the norm to have your permits checked if you're travelling out of Lhasa especially if you're going to the EBC. But were you checked when travelling from Sichuan or Yunnan or Qinghai to Lhasa?

I had to show my permit before i got on the train in Xining

Was just in Tibet last month. If you fly into Tibet, you need the permit. You can't get air ticket without permit and they check at check-in. Suprised at #4. During my stay in Lhasa and talking with other travellers, never heard anybody checks on train--but they certainly do have the right to. Outside of Lhasa, especially towards EBC, permit checks are enforced.

agree with no 5 .

Pazu, I can't comment on that as I didn't travel from Sichuan, Yunnan or Qinghai.

Doby, so your permit was checked while you're travelling from Xinjiang or Nepal? I think these two routes are more problematic and checking is more frequent or usually compulsory (especially if you're travelling from Nepal). But for the other routes around Sichuan, Yunnan and Qinghai, it's usually okay.

I never had a permit and got checked a few times. Never checked anywhere near Lhasa.
Going to Nepal was a little tricky but I told them my guide (who was behind me) had my permit. I never had a guide.
