Foliage in Kyoto area

Country forums / North-East Asia / Japan

Hi everyone!

Would November 11th, 12th and 13th be a good time to see foliage around Kyoto - especially in the mountain areas of Kurama/Kibune and Takao + Uji + Ohara - or would it still be too early? When is peak foliage season in that specific area?
Is it there a difference in the peak season of Kyoto city and the mountains around it? I read the best foliage in Kyoto is usually around the 20-25th of November. Is it correct?

Thanks!

Probably, I was in Kyoto last November until the 8th and the Momiji season had already started. I don't know about the mountain around but on the 5th, when I visited Shisen-do, which on the way to Kuruma, there were plenty of red maple leaves, and it was still promising for more.

You'll probably be fine - fall foliage starts in late October and ends in early December. It usually peaks in the third week of November but that's not always true - last year was a bit earlier than usual. The places you mentioned are higher elevations so they'll probably be at peak (if you are lucky) during that weekend (maybe even earlier). There's no way to know for sure, but you'll be able to see some beautiful leaves in some beautiful locations regardless.
