Hi all, I was wondering what the fastest and most budget friendly way to Tibet would be from the U.S. I'm currently located in Knoxville, TN. Im thinking perhaps a drive to Boston and then a wow air flight to Moscow and then the Trans Siberian? Or perhaps a hopping aboard a freighter in the south east U.S. and taking it up to india then train from there?

Huh? Fastest would be to fly to Beijing or Shanghai then to Tibet. You'll need both a Chinese visa and a Tibet permit.

Plus a group tour to go along with your Tibet permit, and the tour agent will arrange your air or rail transport within China to Tibet.

One way?

Get on a bus to LA or SF and then take one of the discount tickets to China. Just saw $300 from LAX to Changsha for $300 one way on Hainan airlines. From there hard seat train to Xining and then you need to arrange your Tibet permit and tour. Different city pairs will work, probably cheaper than WOWing to Moscow and needing a Russian Visa and then also needing to pay for the trans siberian(it isnt cheap)

From your new post

Times irrelevant, so connecting flights or perhaps hopping a freighter would be doable.

Freighters are expensive. If it takes you 30 days to get from Norfolk harbor to Ningbo harbor, imagine how much food you would need to eat.

The cost of the flight though is really going to be somewhat inconsequential. Once you include the $160 visa and then the tibet permit and tour package you are looking at a lot of money.
