We're planning on doing Beijing-Xian-Lhasa by train in the beginning of july. We're on a fairly tight schedule, so we need to arrange things from home.
So, does anyone know of anyone (reliable) who can actually arrange train tickets TTB from Beijing or Xian to Lhasa in advance?
(We've tried helen at windhorse, but they sell only flight
ttb at the moment.)

We are a group of 5 people and we would like to travel to tibet independently by train and then probably book a tour for 5-6 days. We definitely don't want to book a complete tour that includes all our stay in Tibet. The problem we are facing is that four of us will arrive earlier in beijing, visit beijing and then head to xi'an and xining. the other person will arrive in Guangzhou and take a flight to xining. We would meet there but we don't have a lot of time to arrenge permits in xining at…

I've also put the following query on the China thread-

Can anyone give any current information about transport possibilities (apart from the obvious hiring of a car/driver) between the following towns-

We know there is a bus Xining- Jyekundo, but how about Xining- Huashixia- Maduo- Jyekundo, or is it a case of getting on the Jyekundo bus and stopping off/ getting back on en route?

How about getting to Amnye Machen (do we get off at Huashixia and then onwards? How?)

How about the 2 lakes near Maduo…

If we do have to buy a "tour, " I guess it would be the shortest, cheapest one, could we then just dump the tour once we get to the hotel? and make our arrangements from there??

Thanks. Molly

OK..I have been reading alot of the recent postings about the Permit, the Alien Permit, trains, flights etc. We are planning on going to Tibet in August; fly from Beijing, spend 2 weeks or so sightseeing in and around Lhasa, then a jeep hire to see Samye, Draksum-tso, Drigung Til, Reting, Nam-tso. (final itinerary not finalized yet!)
I am having a hard time finding just a Permit for the 4 of us and a flight to Lhasa. Everyone seems to be going by train, and the agencies seem to want to…

Is anyone planning a tour from Shanghai to Tibet, anytime between 20th June and the 3rd July (2007)?

I have a single traveller, and happy to join forces with another traveller or group, to reduce the cost. The qoutes I get for single traveller tours to tibet are astronomical.

I've read the recent posts about the Tibet train and the permit situation. I want to take the Guangzhou-Tibet train in September but I have been unable to find anywhere to get a TTP in this part of China. I would much rather have a permit, but if I can't get one I will look at doing this trip without.

I've read the post about Westerners not being sold Tibet train tickets in HK. Also at Shenzhen and Guangzhou stations there is a sign saying that GZ-Lhasa tickets cannot be sold to foreigners…

I've read in Lonely Planet that it's possible to rent tents overnight at EBC. Is this true for the winter months also? Has anyone ever done it? If so, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I created a travel blog of my train trip from Beijing to Lhasa. When I was planning the trip I found it difficult to find first hand information on this train and hence I created some web pages that will hopefully help others. Once in Lhasa we traveled via Land Cruiser to Everest Base Camp and then to Katmandu. It was an amazing trip and I am now working on my travel blog for the Land Cruiser part of the trip. If I can answer any questions please feel free to get in touch.
