We love landscapes and are planning these trips:
-Train from Xining to Lhasa (for the mountains)
-Overland Xining-Yushu-Zato (for the grasslands, nomads, and headwaters of the Mekong)

Now, in addition to the above, we are thinking of going overland from Lhasa to Nepal (mainly for EBC).

In terms of landscape, will it be more of the same? Is EBC worth the effort, especially after the above two trips?
Wonder if we will be saturated by the time we do the Friendship Highway.

Love to hear some views…

Travel agency told us, that the flight price from Lhasa to Chengdu is 1500 Yuan p.p. We checked it by elong or other sides. Of course, when we now…

Hello,
After reading through many of the previous posts on TT it seems that most of the recommended tour operators are based in either lhasa or Chengdu. Is it possible to join a group tour that departs from Xian? I am trying to avoid taking the train to Chengdu from Xian only to backtrack a few days later.

I am planning on visiting Tibet in late oct/early Nov and ideally would like to board the train at Xian to Lhasa and then fly from Lhasa to Chengdu. Is this possible?

Alternately I could take…

I have been looking into Tibet tours (from recommend operators here on TT) and are quoted insulting high prices (unjustified close to or equal prices for Bhutan).

Does anyone knows who is cashing in on these insane prices?

Has anyone toured with The Trekker's Society or Tashi Delek Nepal? They have offered me essentially identical tours for very similar prices and just wondering what other people's experiences with them have been.
Thanks :)

Hey all,

Thinking about attempting to bus/4wd it from Lhasa to Chengdu in December-January.

Does anyone have any advice on a) whether this can actually be done? b) how this can actually be done? c) what permits etc I will need to sort out?

PS I have already done Tibet in winter before so I (think I) know what to expect on the weather front :P

Thanks in advance!

We have a 30 day chinese visa. Does that mean that we only have 30 days to travel China and Tibet? Or 30 days for China and additional days if we get the Tibetan permit as well.

The train from Chengdu to Lhasa departed at 20:59 PM on the 19th yesterday despite the bridge collapse; the same applies to the train from Lhasa to Chengdu. So there is no need to worry the train ride between the Chengdu and Lhasa.

This is very bad news, just happened one hour ago. One bridge over the railway from Chengdu to Lhasa just broke down due to the flood. There is no chance now to go to Tibet by train from Chengdu. Govement has released no news when to repair it, but it is a sure thing that it will be repaired soon, maybe just 2 or 3 days as Chinese goverment now are very efficent with post-diaster reconstrcution
