Coming from Lhundrub and Langtang Monastery and going to Drigung Til, is it still possible to cross the river by car at Tangkya and Katsel? Or do you have to go back down to Dagtse/Dechen Dzong to cross Kyi-chu? Or can you continue on the north side of Kyi-chu all the way to the dam at Nyiama Jiangre and cross there?
Just a simple question for a confused backpacker - currently in Tanzania with limited internet access, so please just a simple question so I know whether I can afford to extend my trip and also go to Tibet.
I will arrive to Kathmandu by the beginning of March. Once I am there I want to go overland to Lhasa.
How much should I expect to pay for all these permits, visas, obligatory guides and so on?
Can I fix everything in Kathmandu?
Doing a "fast" (meaning not just rushing through but expecting 2…

We want to cycle the Friendship Highway going the legal way, starting as soon as possible. Anyone interested in sharing the cost of a jeep & co from Lhasa to the border ?
Cost for 2 including train from Xining, permits, jeep, driver and guide is 9950RMB, cost for 3 is 7650RMB, should be a bit cheaper if we’re 4 or 5. No pb to cycle fully loaded or leave stuff in the car and cycle light.
For more info, you can send me a PM or email : nanetteabicyclette at orange.fr

Hello,
I am new to the Thorn Tree, so I appologize if there have already been many posts on this topic.
I am interested in cycling the friendship from Lhasa-Kathmandu. I wanted to do it independently, but I have recently learned that this still isn't possible and you are required to have a guide. I would like to do it in the summer of 2011..June or July..and I am looking for a touring company to join or other individuals and then hire a guide. The prices for some of the touring companies are…
How much freedom are you allowed on a typical Tibet tour? For instance are you free to wander around Lhasa's old city and other towns by yourself? What about when you visit a site like the Potala Palace and monasteries - I know you must be accompanied by a guide but once inside can you wander by yourself or do you have to stay with the guide (and thus other people in the group)?
Thanks!
